Wireless Broadband Update

It's been a while since I've commented on my Verizon Broadband Access.

I've been using it since October mainly because the client will not allow consultant laptops to connect to their LAN.

Overall, the Verizon experience has been good. There are times when Broadband Access is available but the client would only connect to National Access, which is the slower 1xRXX service that operates at 60-80kbs.

I've enclosed a screenshot of my download speed during a recent software download. It was about 1.3mbs.

The service became very important several weeks ago when my client insisted that they had not received my invoice for payment. I was able to logon and resend the invoice during an airport stop which kept cash flowing.

At $80/month, it seemed a bit steep in the beginning, but I can use this card almost anywhere. I've used it so far in Washington DC, Fairfax, VA, Atlanta GA, Cinncinnati, OH, and in Orlando, FL.

I highly recommend the service to anyone.

I'm a little skeptical of that 1.3Mbps since it could have been the result of a one-time burst rather than a typical average. A better test would be to hit one of the DSLReports speed tests.

My new Motorola V551 supports the EDGE standard which supposedly gives speeds of 75 Kbps to 135 Kbps. However, at $80/month and plenty of available WiFi access, I can't envison a need for it.

The yet-to-be-released Treo 650 will support an advanced EDGE that may offer higher speeds. See http://www.palmone.com/us/products/smartphones/treo650/treo650_gsmdsheet.pdf for details on the Treo 650 (the phone I really wanted).

Mark,

I looked at the stats after I downloaded. I guess I should have snagged a screen shot during the download. You are right that it is bursting. The average speed I get is between 500-800kb. But, during downloads, the software interacts with the gateway to use some kind of compression that makes it faster.

I will say that it is SLOW compared to my broadband connection at home and T-Mobile hotspot is faster.

But, it has saved my skin more than once lately so glad to have it.

On another note, I also have the data plan with my TREO 600 through T-MOBILE and it runs at about 57kb consistently. I have to hook it up to a cable though.
